RETHINKING ELECTRIC CARS -- PART 5.
by Bruce Mulliken, Green Energy News

The gist: Electric cars help to resist the creation/maintenance of monopolistic energy sources because they can be “fueled” by any fuel source that creates electricity.

Quote:
Hyundai Heavy, Magna E-Car to create electric car battery JV
Under the plan, Hyundai Heavy and Magna E-Car will carry out joint research and set up a production line in the Canadian province, aiming to churn out 1,000 battery packs annually starting 2014.

The shipbuilder added it will further boost its output to 400,000 by 2018 and 800,000 by 2020 by building an additional eight plants in Europe and North America. It targets a 30 percent share in the electric car market in the regions by 2020.

Random Thoughts: Magna is the company making most of the major electric components for the Focus Electric. From 1000 to 400k in 4 years what an optimistic ramp up!

GM pulls support for Heartland Institute
By Dean Kuipers
March 30, 2012

Gist: After the GM CEO was asked why they are funding this Climate Change Misinformation Org. GM decided the answer was “We don’t know why we are either.”

Random Thought: Hmm this comes one week after Fox News’ magic turnaround on the Volt. I wonder if someone at GM talked to someone at Fox about a “defunding?”

Default Re: Random Bits and Thoughts

I thought this to be a Random bits and Thoughts. I found this is a comment section of one of the EV blogs. I could agree more with the statement presented here.

Quote:
"If so, then it would confirm that Toyota has the right formula for gaining consumer acceptance of plug-in vehicles"

The implication here being that there is one and only one "right formula" for plug-in vehicles? I think the successes of the PiP, Volt and Leaf are proving that there are many "right formulas" for success. I think what plug-ins need today is more options. Many people say "The Leaf is great, but I need to travel out of town often", or "The Volt is great, but I could really use a bigger car". On that note, for me the selling point of the PiP over the Volt is not affordability, but size. I cannot fit my family of 4 + stuff for a week at the lake / christmas gifts / etc. in a Volt. We can fit in a PiP.
We are not all equal in needs. We need choices because we have different needs. The Leaf and Focus are very similar but they clearly have different styles. The Volt is similar but offers range at the expense of petroleum consumption. The Mitsubishi i is similar but clearly a city car. The Tesla has great range and luxury but at a cost. Clearly Hybrids satisfy the range anxiety need. Size, consumption, range, appearance, there really is lots of room for competition. Bring it on....
