A report from USA Today News via the
Tuscon Citizen that Aptera is refunding deposits to customers.
The Aptera looks not so much like a car as it does like a small airplane without wings. Successfully bringing to market such a radical car design would have been a tall order for a major OEM let alone a company that is new to the game.
The founder of Aptera has rightly complained that other start-ups have received funding with nothing more than non-functioning mock-ups, meanwhile Aptera has been unable to secure federal funding with a fully functioning prototype. This fact is no doubt related to the Aptera's radical design.
Though not a fan of the design, I do recognize that the logical conclusion for car design is the most aerodynamic shape possible, which this vehicle is certainly closer to than what we currently think of as "cars."
