Like the Ohio-based Amp Electric Vehicles, Via converts automobiles produced by major manufacturers (in Via’s case, light-duty G.M. pickup trucks) to run on electricity. But rather than a purely electric setup, Via produces a plug-in series hybrid powertrain, where a 24-kWh battery pack is charged either by a wall outlet or an onboard generator, which in turn is fed by the vehicle’s internal-combustion engine. The batteries power a 200-kW motor that is mated to a 4-wheel-drive transfer case. Much like the Fisker Karma, the gasoline engine does not turn the wheels.
