Have You Shared a Charger.... Lately?

Article in Venturebeat about a bill concerning which vehicles can get stickers to use chargers. EV advocates want PHEV or EREVs to be able to use chargers, but when they are done charging they want whoever comes next with their electrified vehicle to be able to unplug that car (if it is done charging) and move the plug to their car.

This is not the first time, or the last time this issue will come up.

It totally makes sense to maximize the use of the charger for people to be able to unplug you if you are done.

Unfortunately many charge stations are installed such that only 1 or 2 cars have access. Installers need to think in terms of maximizing access to the charger. It is conceivable to install them such that 6 cars have access without having to have an excessively long cord.

And yes charging etiquette needs to be worked out. It would be helpful if signs were posted at those stations explaining what the etiquette is. Signs are commonly post at tennis courts explaining the etiquette of their usage, and people are for the most part surprisingly compliant.

This reiterates the point that for the foreseeable future, charging at home is going to be the only reliable method for the vast majority.

Courtesy and technology will clearly have to come together for this to work:
