I agree that is the initial impression. There is alot going on with the instrument panels. My mom recently bought a Ford Edge and she felt a little overwhelmed, but now that she has it well in hand and understands most of it, she really likes it.
Additionally, Ford has hinted that there will be serious customization possible. So it is possible you will be able simplify things to suit your taste.
In general, most reviewers of the Ford Sync technology/instrument clusters, have been very positive, some even suggesting that what Ford is offering there is leaps and bounds beyond those in and even about its class.
