A rough estimate on Volt specs means while charging it would be the same as running 2 plasma TVs per household all night, or 4 refrigerators running full out all night (or for the charging period required, many hours required for a Volt). If there were 50,000,000 EVs charging everyday that is a lot of coal burning to produce that power.

Glad to see good discussion here, thanks. From politicians and talking heads and Ed Begley I've never heard much reality discussed.
Yup. No doubt more EVs on the road means we are going to need more power plants, but to some degree electrification of the fleet gives impetus to the alternative energy market. For example, the Redskins Fed Ex field adding 2mw of solar covered parking spaces is a direct result of FedEx's interest in electrification of the fleet.

In the last 4 years coal has dropped from 55% to 45% as a source from energy generation. Would be nice if we stopped talking about clean coal and made it a reality.

The US really needs to start living in the 21st century. We need Nuclear power. The public needs to be educated that modern Gen III+ nuclear power plants are much safer and some designs are unable to 'meltdown' so no public safety concerns. People need to know that more people have died in the last 50 years as a result of Coal burned power than from all nuclear power plant disasters. Sadly, though, as we see with the Tea Party republicans, ignorant is bliss.

Another great solution is Solar Roadways. Get all of our power from the sun, modernize our roadway infrastructure, and move away from petroleum-based concrete.

It appears that as EVs gain traction so do alternatives means for generating power.

When I try to view that web page using Firefox, the browser flashes rapidly between all black, and something else.

Does this web site require I.E.? What browser/OS do you use?

Using firefox here, maybe you need an update for Adobe Flash?
