Default Hole or Missing Plug in Steering Column?

There is a large hole in my steering column where the key and ignition normally would be. See the pic, taken from the right of the column. Is everyone's like this or should there be a plug of some kind in it to keep contaminants from getting in?
Thanks.

Come on, admit it you tried to stick the fob in to "start it up" and broke the cover.

Wow. It looks like the 2 inch plug popped out. I would look around on the floor, under the mat, and under the drivers seat for it. Most likely it wasn't installed properly. If you do find the plug I would inspect it for any broken plastic before you re-install it.

Our LEAF's have the same unused ignition switch (steering column is from a Versa) but it's also covered with a plastic plug -- I'm sure to save tooling costs, etc. Ford simply uses the standard Focus steering column and plugs it but someone missed this during final inspection and/or it fell off and is under your mat.

Sure looks like a cover is missing. I doubt it's still in your car, you would have probably found it by now. Might as well head over to Ford and order that part.

Ford will replace it I'm sure. The salesman and I discussed it the day I took possession and I had just forgotten about it. I need to remind him. Thanks for the feedback. I was trying to stick the level 2 charger in there.
