Default Ford's Sleeper Feature

One of the reasons Ford has given for justification of a higher price for the Focus Electric is the availability of more technology on the car compared to the Leaf. I have to agree. Two 4.2Ē displays on the instrument cluster, each one with its own 5 way controller to customize displays, and navigate features. Topped of by an 8Ē screen on the center stack. Ford's SYNC and MyFordTouch are the sleeper features that may one day make Ford "the killer app," and make it possible to keep adding value and utility to the Focus Electric longer after you take possession of the fob.

Most interesting is the ability to use the car as a mobile hot spot. This can be done by either tethering a compatible phone to the vehicle or by connecting a USB modem to one of two available USB ports. I know with two iPod toting kids, this feature will see some action when we take delivery.

Another feature which has the ability to really set Ford apart on the tech front is the ability to use Apps with the SYNC system. 10 Apps have been officially integrated, Ford has said they hope to have 50 to 75 Apps available.

Below are some links from Ford which elucidate the many features of SYNC and MyFordTouch.

A general overview of SYNC.

List of phones Ford has tested and features each phone is compatible with.

Note that my phone, the Droid Charge was no where on Fordís list but I found from this forum that at least some of the features work with Sync, obviously Fordís List is not comprehensive.

Unfortunately, the apps feature isn't available in MyFord Touch at this time--that is Sync gen 1 for now (I know--we have two vehicles with MFT). Ford is working hard at bringing the apps feature to MFT but it isn't available today (It will be in the future but they were set back by having to re-engineer the whole thing--the Performance Upgrade).

I don't want to be a negative nancy! Just trying to get accurate information...

Performance upgrade has been available for about a month.

Have you had a chance to install it? Would be interesting to hear your take on the usability of it all. Users of gas based Ford vehicles have reported using the apps with varying degrees of success.

I should note that success or failure in using the apps feature as reported on sites like http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/f...splay.php?f=84 seems to be largely driven by what type of phone the owner is using. Obviously some phones work better than others.

Yes i've had the performance upgrade since the day after it was available (my Focus doesn't have Nav so I was able to download the upgrade from SyncMyRide.com as soon as it was available). At this point in time apps are still not available for the MFT equipped vehicles--they are still catching up to the Gen 1 Sync systems in that respect (Gen 1 has the apps, Gen 2 = MFT no apps yet).

As for the performance upgrade itself: It is a huge improvement in the functionality of MFT--although they did remove some features just so that they could get it out quickly (for instance one of my favorite things to use it for is bluetooth music from my cell-phone. Unfortunately the browse feature over bluetooth has been disabled and all I can do is say play/pause/skip/etc.). Now it responds within a second of hitting the screen (instead of tens of seconds as before). Only 1 reboot so far (old software I'd expect a reboot a week).

My Wife's Edge has also been upgraded (she has nav so we had to wait for the thumbdrive + SD card to arrive in the mail). The Nav screen is much improved as well: Larger symbols and clearer road markings.
